Aquarium Freshwater Fish
You’ve got space set aside for your aquarium, and you may even have the tank all set and ready to go. There’s only one thing missing from your aquarium – freshwater fish. So how do you know which fish to choose?
The fish you decide on depends on what you want your aquarium for. Do you want active fish, always swimming and keeping you entertained? Or do you prefer to relax and watch the vibrant, flashing colors of more docile fish?
You should take the time to research the type of freshwater fish you want for your aquarium, particularly if you plan to have multiple breeds of fish sharing the tank. Failing to do your research ahead of time could mean you end up with the wrong mix… and they may attack one another, and you’ll end up losing more fish than you keep.
Ask The Experts
Rather than listing off reams of fish breeds here, it is better for you to actually go out and look at different fish, and watch them and their behavior in the tank. Your first stop should be your aquarium supplier. Staff there are trained very well, and should be able to advise you on your aquarium, freshwater fish breeds, and the environment that they require. This is the best way for you to not only see for yourself how each fish behaves, but to see which breeds appeal to you, and why.
Before you go in, compile a list of questions. Here’s what you’ll need to ask about fish breeds:
* How well does this fish get on with other breeds? Are there any breeds this fish does not get along with?
* Does this fish need water that is more alkaline (with a lower pH) or acidic (a higher pH)?
* Does this fish prefer open water, or lots of plants and hiding spots?
* How much space does this fish require in the tank?
* What is the ideal temperature for this fish?
* How does this fish like to feed, and how often do they need food?
Take notes, so you can compare the answers for various breeds later on. If you want to have more than one type of freshwater fish, then you want to make sure that the breeds you choose have needs that match as closely as possible.
Feeding Concerns
Choosing fish that have similar feeding requirements will make life much, much easier for you. Some fish prefer to feed at the surface of the water, while others prefer to feed at the bottom of the tank. If you have some fish that are aggressive surface eaters, then they may end up eating all of the food… while your bottom feeders get left out entirely.
Fighting Fish
Some fish will fight… and even eat each other. You want to make sure that your fish aren’t going to chow down on one another! Note that even goldfish can do this, so you need to take this seriously. Other concerns include biting and dominant behavior. You want to match aggression levels in your fish as closely as possible, to avoid having a few bully fish making life miserable for your other fish.
